“Doing more for less” doesn’t always equal a job

Newspapering is not a recession-proof business. We’ve seen our share of cutbacks and positions left unfilled. We complain that “they” are asking us to do more with less, work smarter and be happy we have jobs.

You would think that with all of the smart people in the world that someone would be able to calculate the optimum number of people a company needs to hire and keep through good times and bad so that every five years or so, somebody doesn’t have to tell their wife or husband and kids that Raman noodles and peanut butter is on the menu for every meal for foreseeable future. You would think?
