‘Net Bomb

Just got through a bunch of old N.Y. Times Circuits sections last night. Lots of interesting stuff. One of the funniest is the phenomenon of “Google bombing.” Defined as “manipulating the Web’s search engines to produce, in this case, political commentary.”

Some of the more masterful bombs launched:

  • Typing “miserable failure” into a Google search puts author-filmmaker Michael Moore’s page at the top of the list with the president’s bio from the White House Web site second. Jimmy Carter and Hillary Rodham Clinton are in the top seven.
  • Typing “food nazis” brings up the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s Web site first.
  • Typing “weapons of mass destruction” brings up a satirical Web site that looks like you’ve got a page that doesn’t exist but says the weapons don’t exist.
  • Here’s a suggestion: Type in “mad cow” and up pops Ann Coulter’s Web site!
