Fish story

Rose the goldfish

“Say hello to Rose, our newest addition to the family. Rose swam over from the pet shop this weekend. It’s been more than a year since we owned a pet – besides me that is. Rose fills the void left by Goldie, who passed on to the great septic tank in the ground after two years of being with us (I hate seein’ ‘em fins up).

The girls have been asking for a dog. Fortunately, Abby and the Mrs. are both extremely allergic to cats, dogs, ferrets, rats, rabbits – anything with fur.

That includes me. Sometimes.

When we went to the store, Abby really, really wanted a “small” fish. We don’t have a tank, just a bowl. The sales “clerk” (I didn’t think she was old enough to be working) kept pushin’ the Beta fish for the bowl. I guess they were on special or something. But it’s been my experience that Beta’s don’t do a lot of moving around. We need action in this house. So we chose your garden-variety goldfish, smallish but agile.

Abby named her Rose after Briar Rose in “Sleeping Beauty.” The funny thing is, everybody in the house calls her Goldie. Well, we think it’s a she. Who can tell with fish?
