Big Weekend

I have been too exhausted to post over the last couple of weeks, due to staffing shortages at work. But I had to log in about some of the events of this past weekend, even if I’m two days late. Camille fell in the creek, and Abby made her first successful solo flight (about the same duration as the Wright Brothers’ first flight) on her bike without training wheels. Both ended up with scrapes, though Camille’s was an occasion for hight drama, while Abby’s was a badge of honor. Two things you forget from childhood: how hard it is to resist the lure of the creek, and how hard it is to ride a bike when you’ve never done it before. The child got so frustrated, she kicked her bike, threw herself on the grass, and wept. We sat down on the front steps to take a short break, and after a minute, she said, "Mommy, I’m ready to try again." There was something in her face and her tone that I’d never really seen before. She was determined. Resolute. I never been so proud of her before. In one or two more tries, she did it. My baby.
