I guess it really doesn’t pay to try to get up early and get things done.
Things have been kind of squirrelly at the homestead of late anyway. A week ago, we came home to find that the shelving in our master bedroom closet had given way and all our clothes ended up on the floor. Our closet is now a work in progress thanks to Project Susan.
So, I woke up about 30 minutes early this morning so that I could press a shirt to wear to work today. I grabbed the shirt and a pair of pants that also needed to be ironed from the guest room (aka the current master bedroom closet) and started down the steps. (Note to self: Turn the damn light on in the morning).
At the second-to-last step, my bare feet slipped on the carpet and my feet went a flyin’ (Note: I never let go of the clothes). I landed on the bottom step lower back first and bounced forward onto the slate floor. The pain was searing. I couldn’t call out because it hurt so freakin’ bad and I knew that Susan was in the shower and wouldn’t be able to hear me anyway.
After a couple of minutes on the floor, I managed to climb back up the stairs and into bed for a few more minutes. Susan slipped me a couple of Motrin and I went about taking a shower.
Susan finished dressing and headed downstairs, and I went to wake up the girls to get them ready for the day. Susan, however, called me back and showed me where I had punctured a 6-inch hole in the wall at the bottom of the steps. I had no idea that I had gotten close to the wall.
The Motrin and other pain relief medication helped throughout the day, but I’m still sore around the lower back and in the neck area. Klutz? Yes, I know.
Sad thing is, this isn’t the first time. I actually did this before HOLDING CAMILLE and managed to keep her safe. Me, on the other hand …
Word to the wise: Mixing bare feet with carpet on the steps in the early morning in the dark is not a good idea.
