Parental relevance

The privilege gap is far more real than the fear that haunts so many modern parents — that their children will fail miserably without regular helpings of culture cramming and competitive parenting.

An opinion piece in USAToday examines the government’s Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, which tracks early school experiences of a group from kindergarten through fifth grade.

USAToday boils it down to this: It’s not what you do; it’s who you are. Essentially, the parents’ background — upper socioeconomic status, education — is the most important factor in predicting success of the child in school.

Honey, if you’re reading, I didn’t know about this study until today. I know I’ve told you that one of the reasons I wanted to go back to school was to give our kids something to shoot for. Here’s hard data to say that I may have been right, sort of.

Anyway, this is something that should be on our radar. There are exceptions to every statistic, but over time the numbers seldom lie.

I guess this explains Paris Hilton, right?
