Our little lamb is coming home

Abby’s been away at my parents’ house for the week. She’s been making the trip up North the past three years, and it’s never been easy for us. They’re heading back Saturday.

Camille’s been even more out of sorts. She’s still sleeping in Abby’s bed. The two of them have been sleeping together the past few months. That part’s been great for mom and dad. With the two of them sleeping together, we actually get some sleep, too. Camille’s managed to sleepwalk her way into our room the past two nights. I took her back to bed two nights ago and laid down with her, just so I could get some sleep.

She used to come into our room regularly before she and Abby began sleeping together, but once they started keeping each other company, we got a good night’s sleep. I don’t know how they do it, but Camille would come into our room less than an hour before it was time for us to get up so it was harder for us to justify taking her back to bed.

So we missed Abby for more reasons than our great little foursome.

Speaking of Abby, I interviewed higher ed reporter Lanita Withers on The Beat podcast about an upcoming story related to peanut allergies. The story hits home for us because Abby has a peanut allergy. When she’s away from us, she has to carry her EpiPen with her.

She was first diagnosed when she was about 18 months old. When she was still in daycare, we weren’t as worried because the school was a peanut-free facility. But since she’s entered public school, we’ve had to be more concerned. I’ve eaten lunch with her and she’s very near kids that bring or buy peanut butter and and jelly sandwiches. We preach and pray that she’s not sharing or trading lunches with other kids. I do like that the school tries to put kids with food allergies in the same room and posts signs indicating the allergy.

We have to worry about summer camp, too. To their credit, the folks at Camp Weaver have taken the allergy very seriously.

We haven’t given Camille peanuts yet. Let’s hope that she’s not allergic. There’s one good sign — Camille can eat eggs even though Abby has an allergy to them, too.
