They stole my iBook

Early today, I got an IM from a friend emploring me to click a link he’d sent me. I played along and the link took me to Fry’s Outpost.com. I bit.

I nearly had a heart attack. The site had a new 14-inch iBook with 512 mb of RAM and a superdrive listed for, get this, $122! The price for that model, one of Apple’s newly upgraded iBooks, is $1,299.

So, I bit. I did check back with my friend to make sure this was, in fact, not a site trollin’ for my personal info. He assured me it was a legit site. He said he’d ordered one, and several of his colleagues had ordered one or two. I even went so far as to check with Susan to make sure she was okay with me purchasing it, like a good husband should. After all, the computers in our house already outnumber the people.

So, I placed a Web order, which was confirmed online. After I placed the order, I got nervous and called my friend on his cell to make sure it was actually him sending me the IM. It was.

The problem? No one who ordered one received an e-mail confirmation, which is par for the course when ordering something on the Web. I waited pretty much all day for that e-mail to come.

When I finally got something back from the company, it wasn’t what I’d hoped for.

We all hope to find those unbelievable deals. Most of the time, we come up short.

Oh, well. It’s nice to dream …
