I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out the subject of the last story I wrote. I was living in Connecticut at the time. I’m pretty sure it was an obit for a prominent person in the community. I was the interim city editor at a small daily in the northeastern part of the state.
That was the early ’90s.
I sort of broke back into the print writing business today. The column is called “Personal Adds” and my story appears in today’s Life section. (Click here to read it online.)
I’ve been touting the benefits of “alternative” discipline methods for kids . The drill-sergeant method (situps, pushups, squats) seems to be working at our house. Abby’s strong as an ox and Camille, scary enough, is flexing her biceps after she does her “punishment.” They still get in trouble. A lot. But it never hurts to have strong bodies and minds. Right?
The influence is spreading. A friend at work told me today that her sister’s daughter started doing them last night. A friend at school said they’ve started with their boys. Lowe’s wouldn’t be my first choice to drop ‘em, but when you gotta do it, you gotta do it.
And Susan? Well, I’m ready to get her a campaign hat. She’s embraced this like a good book on a beach vacation.

That’s a very cool idea! Better than time out for a kid like Erik was. For Aja the emotional isolation worked well. But for an energetic kid.. well.. maybe its not too late
.
Cheers,
Anna
Herb,
Thoroughly enjoyed your column, as well as this post!
I’ve posted a response to your column at my blog.
Also, have you received the school schedule yet?
And, are you planning to attend tomorrow’s meet-up?
If so, look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Hardy
Anna: I think Erik would thoroughly enjoy the workout! I’ll be happy to train you on the four-count pushup and teach you cadence.
Hardy: Got a special event coming up tomorrow that won’t allow me to make the meetup (I’ll post about it in the morning). See you at the next one, though.
Oh, and no assignments yet. I’ve been told the principal is making all the teachers write the letters and send them out. We probably won’t know until the open house.
Herb,
