News & Record religion reporter Nancy McLaughlin has had a rough year. Her truck spontaneously caught on fire. Her house was struck by lightening and burned moments after she left to deliver something to someone, leaving her and her young daughter homeless for awhile. And her mother died after a long, painful illness.
That confluence of events would have whupped my butt and the butts of a lot of people. But through it all, I never saw the pressure get to her. Why? Her faith, she says.
As the religion reporter, she’s had to deal with people who others look to for guidance, but who Nancy says she’s found to be people just like you and me. People who have faults, too.
The underlying theme is faith. For Nancy, her faith has been shaken, but not shattered by events and by people because even with their warts showing, she’s seen and felt the good in people, too.
She talked to me on The Beat about her religion beat and her faith.

Nancy is an inspiration, no question about it. Great topic for The Beat, and it’s very well done.
