I just received an e-mail from a family friend who’s been down in the Mississippi/Alabama/Louisiana area helping tenants with recovery from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. He writes:
Herb, not sure you have much access to relief efforts in MS and LA but if you do please talk about some support efforts. Money to the Red Cross etc. I have been down here since the day after the storm, conditions are horrible. In addition to my regular job of helping our tenants I have seen some amazing things. I helped rescue sea lions from the city aquarium and then took a diabetic to the hospital. These are minute compared to what others are doing. I will be here for another week at least. You have the ability to reach many people so please get the word out. Many thanks.– Eddie
Thank you, Eddie, for the note and for giving aid when you can.
I’ve been amazed and heartbroken by the devastation wrought on one of the most well-known cities in the world. I’ve never been to New Orleans, but I’ve longed to go for some time. And the folks in Mississippi and Alabama, there are just no words to describe our feelings. We were just watching TV showing photos of all the missing children and feeling the agony of not knowing where your babies could be, if they’re alive or not.
Just before I checked e-mail, I posted to the N&R Web site a story that says Greensboro now will likely be receiving evacuees from the NOLA area, even more than first predicted.
Charlotte received some today and Raleigh is expecting some soon, too.
Here’s a link to lots of ways you can help.
Also, I’m putting a link box on the right side of this blog to a way to give directly to the Red Cross.
Give early, give often. It could be us someday.
