At dinner tonight, Herb was quiet — tired mostly, having come home from work and cut the grass. "Daddy, why are you making that face?" Camille asked, and imitated his pensive, far-away look. "Are you listening to your brain?" Then she saw my incredulous look. "Daddy’s listening to his brain," she explained to me matter-of-factly. And it was as good a description as I’ve ever heard of thinking, from my newly-minted 4-year-old. But she is still a kid at that "it’s-all-about-me" age. At bedtime, after prayers, I suggested that it was a good time to think about others, like the people who lost their homes in the hurricane. "Like the time God brought me the rainbow.
