Understanding is “rare and beautiful” with teens

This anecdote comes from the brother of a friend. Her brother and his wife are raising a teenage boy, and three other kids, in a rural county near here. We don’t have teens yet (thank goodness!), but I think it’s a hopeful sign, to me at least, that parents and teens can find common ground to communicate:

Here's another aside that I think you'll appreciate: Last night Noah was working on answering some essay questions from an English or Social Studies class (forgot to ask which) based on the class viewing of "Swing Kids" ... the question was "What would a Swing Kid say to a Skin Head?"

After establishing what a "skin head" is (for some reason he was unfamiliar with the movement) and what a "swing kid" was, he was still confused, so I tried to illustrate ... "You're at school listening to one of your hip-hop CDs on your headphones (this is a frustratingly and chronically common state for him) and one of your punk-ass classmates snatches your headphones off your head saying "what are
you listening to?" And then he and his friends beat the crap out of you for listening to "black music."

I could literally see a halogen light bulb snap on over his head and said "go with that" as I left him at the desk to work.

It's a rare and beautiful thing when he doesn't think I'm a complete idiot.
