And the band played on

Abby and Camille had their Christmas lists locked and loaded months ago. But within the past few weeks, Camille’s been begging every day for the following:

  1. A Barbie electric guitar
  2. A piano
  3. Drums
  4. A microphone

We paid lip service to the request because they were to one or the other of us. Finally, one day, she said it to both of us, and it made us pause.

The other day, I finally asked her why she wanted these items. Here’s how it unfolded:

We were driving to school and she started in on the requests again, so I asked why she needed these items. “They’re for our band we’re going to have in C’s bedroom.”

Wha?

Next, she started singing Wake Up by Hilary Duff. It’s a song she and Abby have been singing on a regular basis.

Of course, Camille’s lyrics are a little off:

Wake Up Wake Up
On a saturday night …

London, Paris maybe Topeo
There’s something going on anywhere I go

Hilary Duff

(That “Topeo” should actually be Tokyo.)

Back to the story…

Anyway, she’s singing the song and suddenly stops to beg me to turn it on the stereo in the car. I told her I didn’t have the song, so she asked me to turn on the radio so she could listen to some music. I put it on Radio Disney. You won’t believe what was playing …

Guitar. Make it acoustic. And if it appears she has even the slightest amount of talent, exploit the hell out of her. After all, she could be the next Jessica Simpson. And she’s even got a sister to follow in her foot steps. And SUSAN could be like Jessica’s mother! Okay, Susan, practice squealing, “That’s so CUTE!” You, Herb, could be the manager. After all, you’ve got that MBA and all, and, and. Hey! I’m getting into this.

It’s a step, jw. Whether it’s off a precipice into the cold, dark unknown or into the white-hot spotlight of stardom, mommy and daddy will be there.

Herb / Susan. I have the perfect guitar and mini amp for Camile. I will send it over to Anna’s via Erik. It is one I was given by Wal-Mart reps. It’s no Fender, but it is a nice entry level guitar and amp. I will expect royalities if she writes a hit song(s).

    Eddie,

Right now she’s covering a lot of songs and not writing any on her own. She IS making up songs, but they don’t have a lot of commercial appeal.

I know I should be recording, but I don’t want to seem like I’m exploiting her or anything. :-)

Sounds like the perfect manager to me. I hope she likes red.

A microphone….Herb, Maybe I have found that field audio assistant I have been talking about. I suggest the SENNHEISER ME66/K6 SHOTGUN COMBO for $494.00. Please order her a windscreen. She’s gonna miss a little school though. Can you get her a little step ladder too.

    Jerry,

She’s going to need more than a step ladder. And if you think some of our reporters complain a lot… :-)
