Trailblazer

I got an email today that blew my mind. This is the woman who delivered me, and I believe, all of my sisters as well. To this day, I remember sitting in that waiting room in Bahama, sometimes woozy with fever, sometimes just nervous because a shot might be waiting for me.

I didn’t think it odd to have a woman doctor as a child, though it was still fairly unusual at the time, particularly in a country place like Durham County was then, especially that very rural corner of Bahama. She was blunt but kind, and she taught me how to get a shot without squirming or tensing up and making it worse.

And though I never really consciously thought about it that way when I was a kid, she was more example in my life that women could do anything. I’m delighted to know she’s still around, and still not cutting her “babies” any slack. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Wow!!! Mom has to read this, she has told me several stories about this Doctor, I think she remembers her much in the same way you did. What an AMAZING woman. She has spent her whole life helping others, and asking litle for herself. Truely someone who deserves some recognition.

I just got home from the barn (Harley rocks!) and read the article. Brought back so, so many memories. Remember how she had that stove in the waiting room and it would get so hot, you’d think you were going to explode? And then she’d come out with that stern expression on her face. I think every man, woman and child who came in that room was afraid of her a little. Love her! Glad she’s still kicking!!

I just finished reading the article! Melvin forwarded it to me. She hasn’t changed a bit! I never realized she was that selfless and giving! A diamond in the rough!!

Melvin pulled the story up from the News & Observer websight for me and I asked him to forward it to each of you. Dr. Roberts was always kind and caring to me and to each of you. I remember going to her house at dinner time one night because Rita had put beads in her ears. (I was on the verge of tears thinking it might require an operation to remove them.) She opened her office and got them out and sent us all home happy and relieved. There are many stories I could tell you about her. She is a great lady!
