We’ve been reading a lot about African American inventors and explorers this month and I’ve been surprised how much the girls have retained. Abby has a special interest in Harriet Tubman, primarily because of a book tape we got from a fast-food restaurant that did a fine job of dramatizing some events in her life.
When we visited my parents in January, there was a marker near a restaurant on the river in Wilmington (Del.) that describe how she crossed there on her way north.
We now have another significant black female role model to read about. Effa Manley , as well as 16 other figures from the Negro and Pre-Negro baseball leagues, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday.
I’d never heard of her before, but that doesn’t surprise me because I hadn’t heard of a lot of the inventors or explorers that we’ve been reading about this month.
I’m sure we’ll uncover more.

Very cool story! When I was Abby’s age, I started reading biographies – I was fascinated with what famous people had accomplished. I think it helped establish a belief in me early in life that anything was possilbe for those with persistence and character.
I agree. I’m glad she has the interest in people and what they’ve accomplished. And she’s retaining a good portion of it.
Abby’s a smart girl, anyway! And I’m not saying that just because she’s my granddaughter. Hugs!!
There is nohing more inspiring than hearing about great achevements by real people. It’s amazing what people truely have the power to accomplish. I am sure that both of your daughters are going to do some amazing things. They are very intellegent and strong willed young ladies!!!!
