On this most momentous occasion, here are my top 10 reasons for how Susan and I have weathered 10 years of marriage on our anniversary today.
10. The snortle. Yes, we both do it. It’s both a blessing and a curse. The deep, throaty single snortle. The triple snortle. It’s very cute, unless it turns into a full-blown snore. Then, it’s time for a shake and a reposition to the side. Sleeping on our backs is deadly.
9. Mac love. Need I say more?
8. Our love of a good story. We both love to read good stories, but I’m humbled by your ability to tell a good story. It’s gotta be a Southern thing. And the girls like it, too.
7. Lift and support. No one can do that voodoo that we do to bring each other out of the doldrums.
6. Our feature presentations. I love that you love movies even more than I do!
5. Higher ed. I would not be near achieving my dream of a master’s degree without your support. The cool thing is, I’m about to return the favor for you.
4. The leg curl. Wrapping your leg around the back of mine when we hug. Now Abby does it! Priceless.
3. A tree grows in Greensboro. Yes, you swore up and down that you never wanted to be an editor. It took me a long time to change your mind. Now look at you. It’s into every fiber of your being. Best editor and teacher, pound for pound, I’ve ever met. You’re a true inspiration.
2. Yin and yang. You chose me. I chose you. Despite all the obstacles.
1. And the number one reason: Thing 1 and Thing 2. Our best work ever. Period.
