Lemony thicket

Lemon bushWe did major yard work today, clearing a path to our house by ripping nasty old bushes out of the bed in the front. I also attacked the woolly bush by our driveway. But I got a little surprise when I went at it with the hedge trimmers: The trimmings smelled just like lemon zest!

I couldn’t believe it at first. But I called Susan and Abby over to double check my olfactory sense and sure enough, they smelled the lemon scent, too.

Abby also smelled hamburgers. I thought she was a little whacky, but after awhile, I did, too. I think it might have been the undergrowth.

A meal in a bush. Who would have thought!

In the meantime, anybody know what this bush is? (Click the picture for a larger size. And there’s a closeup on Flickr.)
