Security? Yeah, right…

So, the kids and I are at the bank to FINALLY set up a savings account to park Abby’s birthday money.

A very nice, pregnant lady helps us, giving me a form to fill out with Abby’s info. Of course, there’s a line for her SSN. I start to fill it out then notice there’s a huge stack of papers behind it.

Am I going to be here forever?

No! It’s a stack of the same form.

Let’s talk security here people! Don’t you watch movies?!!!

I press down, someone comes behind me with a trusty old No. 2 pencil, lightly shades the area and, bingo! A ready-made social for nefarious endeavors.

Thinking quickly, I remove the rest of the papers and use only the clipboard. And I write lightly.

No wonder people are getting ripped off.

Or am I being overly cautious?

No, you’re not being overly cautious.

Despite all the hoohah about online ID theft, something like 80% of it is still the old-fashioned kind.

Why give a stack when you only need one??! I’m wondering about this nice pregnant lady! Or is she just dense?

I’d be willing to bet someone else’s account and routing numbers that it’s just how they’ve done it. They get someone in, hand them this clipboard to get basic info to start the account, then hand it to the next person.

Most people would just fill it out and pull off the top sheet.

Never trust the living and walk softly past the dead. I totally agree with Lex. There are more people stealing this stuff the old fashioned way. Even some paper shredders are useless these days. Thanks for sharing.

Good for you being cautious, I don’t think I would have thought about that, am too trusting.
