A man has been charged with kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old American girl who was found in an underground bunker after alerting her mother by text message.
The teenager was found by South Carolina sheriff’s deputies about 1km from her home in a 4.5m-deep hole in the side of a hill that was covered with plywood. The bunker had a hand-dug toilet, a camp stove and shelves made with cut branches and canvas. …
The sheriff said the text message the girl sent to her mother came from Mr Filyaw’s mobile phone and deputies began looking for him over the weekend in Kershaw County.[via News.com.au]
When I mentioned this to Susan tonight, she said she got a real chill when I related the bunker aspect of the story which was eerily like the rape and murder of a girl in The Lovely Bones, a book I bought for her but have yet to read.
It’s a must read now.
Thankfully, the girl was rescued and the suspect arrested. A harrowing ordeal and one, as a parent of two girls, I dread even thinking about.
