Men @ work at work and at home

New study: Men work as much as women do. – By Joel Waldfogel – Slate Magazine
Everyone from economists and sociologists to Oprah knows that women work more than men. Their longer combined hours, at the home and at the office, stop men from taking afternoon naps on the couch and cause fights that end with men spending nights on the couch. And yet according to new study, those longer hours are a myth, because its just not true that women carry a heavier load.

Scandalous you say? Gotta be a joke, right? Yes, I know, you can point to some guys who buck the stats and instead of taking Sally to soccer practice, he plays golf, goes out for drinks then hits the cigar bar. The article says the study cites a 20-minute advantage in leisure time for the guys. Is this extra time for the fellas spent on lofty pursuits such as reading or charitable work? Nope, it’s what you think: Sitting in front of the boob tube.

The study also says that this equality doesn’t hold true in rich vs. poor countries. The gap in the time spent working in poorer countries is greater for women than it is in richer countries.

I guess, as the article says, there’s a social norm in richer countries to motivate men to pitch in more. I think they’re just afraid their wives will get ticked and seek half the family assets. That’s strong motivation for sharing half the load in my book. Of course, I’m one of the good ones, if I say so myself. I use my 20 minutes to do posts like this. ;-)

What do you think? Do men or women work more? Take the poll. (It’s also in the blog sidebar to the right.)
