Sensative subject: Black or brown dolls (IndyMoms | Where Moms Connect)
Most of you are familiar with the Bratz Dolls. I witnessed something really interesting earlier.A mom and her daughter were obviously shopping for the little girl friends. They came across the Bratz Dolls. The only ones left were the Black or maybe it was the brown one. The little girl told the mom that she didn’t want to buy that one because it was the black/brown one. The mother agreed and they left Target and decided to continue their search.
The other day, Susan and the girls were culling through toys getting ready for a consignment sale. They’ve actually been doing this over the course of a few weeks, and Camille’s been in heaven getting Abby’s old Barbie dolls.
This time, Camille had her choice of Bratz dolls. There were several different color dolls. Camille chose only the white ones. She never said why and we never asked.
What does that mean? We don’t have an answer. We’re just happy we don’t have to buy any more of those things for Christmas.

When Lauren was younger, she asked for a “black Barbie” for a birthday gift. I take no credit for that; she just wanted one.
Brings up reminders of that survey/test they did where the young black girls thought black girls were ugly and white girls were pretty, no matter what they looked like.
But no matter what the color, I bet they all think skinny is pretty, even when it’s not.
I don’t have a good answer, either. One of my best friends, however, has outlawed us from buying any blonde dolls for her 3-yr-old. She said she grew up with blonde dolls, and with her Cherokee roots and dark hair, she always thought she wasn’t pretty because her dolls didn’t look like her.
What’s been kind of inspiring to me is the girls show interest in the white friends hair and their white friends are in awe of their braids.
I’m thinking it’s just an interest in difference.
