Google Checkout?

I usually don’t click on banner ads, even though it’s a big part of my current day job now, but I saw a big ad about Google Checkout on Cnet and it piqued my interest:

Google Checkout: Buyer Help Center - How does Google Checkout work?
How does Google Checkout work?

Google Checkout makes online shopping quick and easy – now you can buy items from stores across the web, in just a few steps. And you wont have to enter your billing and shipping information each and every time you shop online Heres how it works:

  • You find something youd like to purchase from a store that accepts Google Checkout.
  • Add items youd like to buy to the stores shopping cart.
  • When youre ready to check out and complete your purchase, click the Google Checkout button. Youll need to log in to your account, or create one if you havent already. Learn more about creating an account.
  • Review your order details and click Place your order now. Youre done
  • After you place an order, well send you a confirmation email along with a receipt.

I use a boatload of Google apps. The company’s invading my life. I’ve even got Susan using iGoogle and that’s inspired a few people at work.

Now, when are they coming out with Google Babysitter?

Google Checkout is a competitor to Paypal - they want people to buy through their checkout rather than other products such as Paypal, 2Checkout, NoChecks, SecureTrading, WorldPay, etc. The big problem with Paypal is the cost so on balance Google Checkout is a good product. We use it on our Chess Sets, Chess Clocks, Chess Computers site and have found good results through the Google Checkout badge they supply. They’re doing free processing through 2007 so that will save us a lot in the 2+% charged by our other main checkout (3.4% charged by Paypal!!!).
