“The Speech” opens dialogue on mixed race

And it’s about time thanks to Sen. Barack Obama and all those that have made race an issue.

We often speak in terms of black and white. But mixed race means much more. For example, how is your life different when your mother is Filipino and your father is Arab? What about when you trace your roots to African, American Indian and Irish roots?

Well, it’s the story of America. The story we don’t often talk about. Watching this video, one woman made an interesting point: This society likes to put people into little boxes. You belong to this or that group and that’s how you’re defined. But mixed race people don’t really fit into those little boxes. And that makes other people uncomfortable.

“Ultimately the goal is to not have to check a box.” –Carmen Van Kerckhove, a diversity consultant

The New York Times takes a stab at writing about it. But a story is just a story.

The dialogue needs to continue. It’s attracted Susan’s interest to the point she’s considering focusing on that area of communication in her master’s quest. Sadly, she’s found, there’s not much research on the subject.

At least, it’s an opportunity for her to further it.

And those African, American Indian and Irish roots? That would be me.
