I started to write about this earlier, but it’s been really, really busy at home and at work. Even during spring break we were scramblin’.
But while the kids and I were walking Pip the other day after several days of rain, I had one of those “Aha!” moments in my understanding of Abby.
We were walking around the expanse of park in our neighborhood doing our best to avoid dog poo (That’s another story. People, pick up your doggy’s poo!). It’s a good mile around the park and we usually meander and talk and spend some quality time together trying to tire out the dog.
On this day, the girls started to notice that there were lots of worms on the sidewalk. I don’t exactly know when, but we were about halfway through the walk when I noticed that Abby was picking up the worms — you know how they’re all over the sidewalk after a rain — and putting them back in the grass. I asked here why she was doing it.
She said, and I paraphrase, because they were blind and didn’t know where to go and if she didn’t do it they would burn up on the sidewalk.
And that’s Abby in a nutshell. Her teachers called it a long time ago. The child has nothing but heart.
