Mildred Loving, matriarch of interracial marriage, dies
RICHMOND, Va. - Mildred Loving, a Black woman whose challenge to Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling striking down such laws nationwide, has died, her daughter said Monday.
Almost two years ago I posted about the possibility that Susan and I couldn’t have been married if it weren’t for Richard Loving, a White man, and his wife Mildred, a Black woman. Think about this: The Supreme Court ruling in 1967 struck down laws that had been in existence for around 400 years.
Remember June 12 is Loving Day in honor of this brave couple and interracial couples around this country. It won’t be too hard for us. It’s less than a week after our anniversary.
