Not as bad as pickin’ your nose

There are times when you want to crawl under a rock. Like when your then 5-year-old asks a friend of yours to see something personal that really shouldn’t be shared in public.

Now, today wasn’t that bad. But it was uncomfortable. As a parent, I should have learned by now that I’m on kid time, not my time. So when they’re ready to leave, I’d better go.

I didn’t learn my lesson.

I was talking to a local business owner. I’d gotten the conversation started because he was working on his Mac at the pool as was I. But he was using a USB connect card from his cell provider and I was glomming off the pool wifi.

We were talking about food allergies when my oldest daughter stuck her nose in my pit and asked, “Daddy, did you put on deodorant today?”

“Of course, I did darlin’.”

“Well, it smells kind of funny in there.”

As it turns out, she didn’t like the way my pit juice (Old Spice, but who’s namin’ names. Can you say refund?) smelled. It wasn’t that the pit itself smelled bad.

Thankfully, my conversation partner kept going without a hitch. I, in the meantime, stuck both hands in my pits until I could check for myself.

Isn’t parenthood grand?

Sounds like she’s got a career in journalism ahead of her. Asking people personal questions in public? No problem. She’d be right at home at Gov. Sandford’s news conference the other day …

I didn’t think people still used “career” and “journalism” in the same sentence any more.
