Day 2 of running with my daughter! Abby and I got up a little before 5 a.m. and ran about a half mile again. If I can get the sleep out of my eyes and if I don’t succumb to the desire to keep my head on my pillow, I can do this!
For Abby, man, she can pop out of bed and get moving a lot quicker than I can. I made the offer to Camille to come with us. This morning, she said her stomach hurt. On Monday, she just didn’t want to go.
I’m not going to make the kids go with me. Abby volunteered and I must admit that having a partner has been a lot better than running on my own.
Abby made the observation: “Are we going slower than yesterday?” I said yes. During the last 50-yard stretch, I picked up the pace quite a bit, though. After we finished, she asked: “Why did you go faster at the end?” I told her that it’s always better to start slower and finish with a strong kick. Frankly, I wasn’t warmed up until the end of the run anyway.
We’re starting slowly. But we’re doing it together. My ultimate goal is to lose weight, lower my blood sugars and generally get into better shape. I hope we can do a couple of 5Ks together in the future. I love the time with Abby, too. We’re not talking much right now – we’ve gotta get our breathing down – but we’re having fun.
I’m crossing my fingers that we can sustain this. We’re only doing about a half mile this week but we’ll pick it up next week.
