And we think OUR kids are funny…

A colleague at work passed this along. I laughed so hard, I cried.
And I still can’t pick a favorite:

Every year, English teachers from across the country can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. [...]

Conversations at bedtime

Camille: “Can daddy make me an olive tomorrow?”
“You mean an omelet?”
Camille: “Yeah, with an egg. And some ham and some cheese. Maybe on a piece of bread.”
“Sure, baby.”

Back to school

Tonight, I officially returned to academia — on a part-time basis. If undergraduate days could be described as “dazed and confused,” graduate days would be more like “exhilarated and terrified.”
Things I like: 1) my professor is very specific about her expectations and methods of evaluation. 2) our class is very diverse in terms of [...]

A visit to Urgent Care and the secret language of feet

Today was the last day of soccer camp, which traditionally ends with a game and closing ceremonies. I missed it last year, so I wanted to go this year. But when I got there, our normally bubbly Abby was sitting down, holding her stomach and looking sick.
What did you eat for lunch? Pizza, she said. [...]

Little Readers

Our children have developed distinct and separate newspaper reading habits. In these days of media competition and declining newspaper use — especially among the young — the fact that they have a newspaper habit at all is astounding.
I don’t really think it’s because we work there, but because they see us read it [...]

Nice work

Our friend Rick has one cool day job. He’s a freelance videographer, which takes him all over the world and frequently under the ocean.
Right now, he’s working with a crew of archaeologists documenting and recovering artifacts from the Mardi Gras, a 19th century shipwreck which lies 4,000 feet down in the Gulf of Mexico. A [...]

An unexpected gift

You never know when you start down a road exactly where it’s going to take you, or the unexpected things you’ll find along the way. Since I started planning my return to college, I’ve run into various hurdles and difficulties. I’ve also gotten some unanticipated gifts.
My current Waterloo is finding my immunization records, which will [...]

Disturbing

Here’s my vote for disturbing product introduction of the week: the Infusion Roaster. You be the judge: infusion roaster or turkey bidet?

As if the photo weren’t troubling enough, add this text, straight from the press release:
Roasting turkey and chicken typically takes a lot of time and often results in dry meat. The Infusion Roaster is [...]

I’m in!

If you notice me wearing a new piece of jewelry tomorrow, a distinctive yellow and blue pin bearing a dashing helmed Spartan, it’s not that I’ve become an avid fan of “300.”
It’s because I’ll soon be a Spartan myself!
I won’t get the official letter until next week, but I got an email tonight [...]

I did it!

I came, I saw, and I didn’t let it kick my butt.
Me vs. the GRE is officially over. And I did even better on the actual test than I did on the practice test. It’s a respectable score, and that’s good enough for this 48-year-old.
Only one thing to do now:
Let the wild rumpus start!

The George we never knew

To celebrate President’s Day, Camille and her classmates got lots of pictures of the various presidents to color, and as always, she put her own personal slant on the matter. In addition to a nice blue coat and a green shirt, the father of our country got purple ruffled cuffs, one yellow sleeve and a [...]

Oscar Snarkfest III

Thanks to my wonderful husband, I’m actually going to be able to go online from the beginning this year, including the pre-Oscar show! (Hit refresh periodically, as I’ll be updating this post throughout the night.)
It was a real affirmation for me when they started doing those red carpet shows, which focused on one of the [...]
