Nice work

Our friend Rick has one cool day job. He’s a freelance videographer, which takes him all over the world and frequently under the ocean.
Right now, he’s working with a crew of archaeologists documenting and recovering artifacts from the Mardi Gras, a 19th century shipwreck which lies 4,000 feet down in the Gulf of Mexico. A [...]

I can say I knew him when he was just a lowly photographer

I’ve had many a conversation with Seth Gitner, a colleague at our sister paper in Roanke, Va.
The guy’s gone big-time now, garnering accolades for his multimedia work, including a Digital Edge award in 2006 for The Crooked Road.
He’ll be speaking at a National Press Photographers Association Multimedia Summit in Portland, Ore, at the end of [...]

Greensboro bloggers outside of outside.in top 10

It appears Blogsboro is not in the outside.in top 10 for “bloggiest U.S. neighborhoods.”
What is outside.in? I dunno. Another aggregator aggregating content, mostly news-record.com and gotriad.com content.
I’m feeling kind of indifferent about it. How about you?

Reading the signs

It’s time to go on the record. I’m applying to graduate school.
There, I’ve said it.
Herb and I started talking about this as he was finishing up his MBA at Elon. I gravitated to the Communications program at UNCG, where the courses have wonderful parallels to the world I work in every day — newspapers. [...]

A trial balloon for the Sit-Ins

One of my pet projects for next year is to improve our Sit-Ins site. Frankly, I think it’s been off the radar for awhile.
I’ve got a few ideas in the works for next year in anticipation of the MLK holiday and Black History Month, but not a major overhaul.
We get a lot of traffic in [...]

Blogging as an occupation

If you look closely, you might see a couple of people you know:

Or not.

Positive imagery

From the N&R:
Curtis Cotton III, a UNCG junior, said the campaign is a welcome effort to bring the positive accomplishments of black men to the forefront.
“A lot of us are tired because we’re striving so hard not to be the stereotype, but we’re getting overshadowed,” Cotton said.
“What do you see on the news? Another [...]

Let it rest, people

I rarely comment about work stuff. But, my former boss wrote on his blog about a story in my wife’s section and received some unfavorable comments.
I don’t remember how I came across the web site, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, but I brought it to the attention of the writer, Katie Reetz, because [...]

The business potential of the college press

Dan Gillmor asks “Why Are College Papers Being Read?” then answers, “College newspapers are relentlessly local.”
Dave Winer posits: “Another reason why college papers are worth reading — they aren’t owned by media companies.”
To which Gannett (which owns two of my former employers) and Viacom give an answer.
Seems to me there could be some good partnership [...]

See Susan write!

See Susan write really, really well!
The story really did need a bigger audience.
Of course, the family got it first. The rest of Greensboro had to wait.

New post

It seems I’ve got a new job.
I’m looking forward to the new duties.
Start date is Sept. 18, but I’ll be tying up quite a few loose ends in my old job before then.

Find and read this diamond in the rough

Keep on the lookout for more of this guy’s stories.
Between my ribs and his banana pudding, no wonder my cholesterol is sky high. Not to mention my blood sugar.
